Pastrol economy support

Strengthening Turkana’s Traditional Livelihoods for Resilience and Prosperity The pastoralist way of life is central to the cultural identity and economy of the Turkana people. At TIPD Kenya, we are committed to enhancing and sustaining the pastoral economy — supporting livestock-keeping communities to thrive in the face of environmental and economic challenges. What We Do. Livestock Health & Veterinary Outreach
We provide mobile veterinary services, deworming, and vaccinations to protect herd health and reduce disease outbreaks. Mobility Rights & Grazing Access
We advocate for the recognition of traditional migratory routes, communal grazing zones, and cross-border livestock corridors to maintain pastoralists' mobility and resilience. Livestock Value Chain Development
TIPD helps communities access better markets, improve animal husbandry practices, and increase value through processing and packaging of livestock products (meat, milk, hides). Training in Pastoral Best Practices
Through workshops and community exchanges, we promote climate-smart grazing, breeding, and water management techniques tailored for arid lands. Policy Engagement & Indigenous Advocacy
We work with local and national stakeholders to influence policies that protect pastoralists’ rights and promote sustainable livestock development.

Why it matters

Livestock is more than an economic asset in Turkana—it is a symbol of heritage, identity, and survival. However,
climate change, land disputes, and market barriers threaten the future of this traditional economy. TIPD Kenya ensures that pastoralist communities are supported with tools, knowledge, and platforms to adapt and prosper. Livestock as Cultural Identity – We promote the recognition of livestock not just as an asset, but as a core part of Turkana heritage and identity. Climate Adaptation for Herders – We equip pastoralist communities with tools and knowledge to adapt to drought, erratic rainfall, and shifting grazing patterns. Peacebuilding for Land Access – We support dialogue and local agreements to resolve conflicts over grazing lands and reduce pastoralist displacement. Market Access & Economic Inclusion – We help herders overcome trade barriers by linking them to markets, cooperatives, and value-added livestock enterprises.
