Livelihoods Development

Livelihoods Development

Empowering Turkana Communities to Thrive in a Changing Economy. At TIPD Kenya, we recognize that resilient livelihoods are the backbone of dignity and self-reliance for Indigenous communities. Our Livelihoods & Pastoral Economy program is committed to strengthening traditional and emerging economic practices that support pastoralist households across Turkana.

What We Do.

Pastoralist Support & Mobility Rights
We protect pastoralists' right to mobility and access to grazing lands while supporting herd health through mobile veterinary clinics and vaccination programs. Diversified Livelihood Training
We train communities—especially youth and women—in alternative income-generating activities such as agroecology, artisan crafts, eco-tourism, and sustainable fishing. Climate-Resilient Agriculture & Water Access
In dryland areas, we support the adoption of drip irrigation, drought-tolerant crops, and water harvesting systems to enhance food security. Market Access & Value Chains
We link local producers to markets and build cooperative structures that help communities increase value for livestock, hides, honey, beads, and other goods. Youth & Women’s Economic Empowerment
By offering entrepreneurship training, business incubation, and micro-finance linkages, we nurture local enterprises that reflect Indigenous values.

Why It Matters.

Turkana's economy is historically rooted in pastoralism. But climate shocks, displacement, and modern pressures are transforming traditional ways of life. Our work ensures communities adapt and innovate while honoring their heritage. By improving livelihoods, we reduce vulnerability and unlock the potential of Turkana’s people to define their future. Pastoralist Mobility & Herd Health – We protect pastoralist movement rights and provide mobile vet services to sustain traditional livelihoods. Alternative Livelihood Training – We equip youth and women with skills in crafts, agroecology, and eco-tourism to diversify income sources. Climate-Resilient Farming & Water Access – We promote drought-tolerant crops, drip irrigation, and rainwater harvesting to improve food security. Market Access & Local Enterprise – We strengthen cooperatives and link producers to markets to boost incomes from Indigenous products.
